Self Defense For Seniors

Posted On Sep 13, 2022

Every senior deserves to feel safe, which is why it’s important to have skills in place for a worst-case scenario.

Violence against seniors is on the rise. Because older adults have slower reflexes and less strength than their younger peers, they can be perceived as an easier target for crime. Preparing some self defense moves can reduce your anxieties and give you the confidence to fend off an attack if needed. Here are some ways to avoid being a victim and to fight off an attacker if you are being targeted.

Appear Less Vulnerable

For criminals selecting their next victim, age may have less to do with it than you think. In a research study conducted with prison inmates, mannerisms and nonverbal cues that suggested vulnerability helped attackers identify the most desirable targets. The study showed that criminals were looking more for signs of weakness or fear than an older age. So when you’re out, stand up straight, walk with confidence and keep your head up. This will help you present yourself as more of a threat to an attacker.

Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

It’s easy to get distracted by your phone or your directions, but by not paying attention, you make yourself more vulnerable to attack. Make eye contact with those around you to let them know you see them and to remove the element of surprise. This will also help you identify them in the event of a lineup. At night, staying in well-lit areas eliminates the possibility of anyone lurking in the shadows or startling you.

Get Loud and Use What You’ve Got

If you’re being assaulted, make as much noise and commotion as possible. Making noise scares off attackers in addition to attracting the attention of potential witnesses. Tools like pepper spray or a whistle can be beneficial to keep on a key ring, but yelling will do the trick, too. Anything you have on hand can also be used as a weapon, like an umbrella, a walking stick or a purse. When you’re walking to your car, keep your keys in your hand in case you need to use them for self defense.

Target Vulnerable Areas

The best practice in the event of an attack is to aim for sensitive areas. Even if the attacker is stronger than you, they still have weak spots. Basic self defense moves that target these areas should immobilize an attacker for enough time for you to get away.

  • Throat. Aim for the front of the neck for a more impactful hit, as it’s more sensitive than the sides.
  • Eyes. Eyes are extremely delicate, so lightly jabbing an attacker’s eyes with your fingers or throwing dirt in their eyes can cause enough damage for you to escape.
  • Groin. Use your feet or fists to strike an opponent’s groin in an upward motion.
  • Nose. A punch to the front of the nose can be very painful. Even if you aim for the nose and miss, you’re still likely to strike the attacker’s face.

Learn Cane Fu

No, that’s not a typo. Cane fu is a type of cane self defense for seniors. Since it’s used for walking, you’ll always have it with you and can use it as a weapon if the need arises. Though you can use any cane for cane fu, your cane should be heavy enough to wield, but not so heavy that you can’t use it against an attacker. Canes designed specifically for cane fu offer features like rubber grips, wider curves and notches along the shaft.

Employ Verbal Judo

You don’t have to be physically powerful to fend off a criminal. Verbal judo, a series of communication techniques designed to de-escalate situations, can be used in daily conflict as well as during a criminal altercation. Many police officers are required to learn verbal judo in order to diffuse situations with dangerous or noncompliant individuals. Courses are available online to help you learn the art of redirecting behavior and resolving conflict verbally.

Learn From a Professional

A local self defense or martial arts class can help take your skills and confidence to the next level. Learning from a live professional is best, as you can practice on real people and get feedback from your instructor. Many senior centers and community centers offer senior self defense classes or cane fighting classes. If an in-person course isn’t an option, you can find online tutorials on simple self defense moves.
